5 Small Changes That Will Completely Transform Your Yoga Practice
It’s easy to assume that if something feels uncomfortable in your yoga practice, it’s something you need to “work through.”
Tight hamstrings.
A restless mind.
An inability to fully relax.
But often, the issue isn’t your body, it’s your setup.
Small, intentional changes can completely shift how a pose feels. And in many cases, those changes come from using simple, supportive props.
Here are five small shifts that can make a big impact.
1. Add Height to Reduce Strain
If you’ve ever felt strain in a forward fold or lunge, adding height under your hands can make a significant difference.
Yoga blocks bring the ground closer to you, allowing your body to release tension instead of fighting against it.
This simple shift can reduce pressure in the lower back and hamstrings, helping you move with more ease.
2. Add Weight to Encourage Relaxation
Adding gentle weight, like sandbags to the body—especially across the lower belly or hips—can help signal safety to your nervous system.
This encourages deeper relaxation and can make restorative poses feel more grounding and effective.
It’s a subtle addition, but one your body will immediately recognize.
3. Add Softness Where You Need Support
Not all support needs to be firm.
Adding softness under your body—whether it’s a folded blanket or a bolster—can relieve pressure points and help your body settle more comfortably into stillness.
This is especially helpful in longer holds or restorative practices.
4. Support Your Body Instead of Holding It Up
In many poses, we’re used to holding ourselves in place.
But when your body is fully supported, it no longer needs to grip or brace. That’s when true release can happen.
Using props to hold your body allows your muscles to soften in a way that effort alone can’t achieve.
Think about adding a Long & Lean Bolster under your hands or elbows in Low Lunge. Or our Beginner Restorative Yoga Bundle for all the props you need in many of these poses.
5. Let Your Practice Change with You
Your body isn’t the same every day. Your practice shouldn’t be either.
Some days you may need more movement.
Other days, more support.
Props give you the flexibility to meet your body where it is, instead of forcing it into a fixed routine.
Yoga isn’t about pushing harder. Yoga is about paying attention.
And often, the most powerful changes come from the smallest shifts.
Adding a block.
A blanket.
A little weight.
These simple adjustments can turn your practice into something that not only looks different, but feels completely different.
